Yoga Mandir offers courses at three syllabus levels, plus two levels in the beginners program. The school program also offers a Led Practice course and a Remedial course. Courses are structured according to syllabus in Asana and Philosophy and are not open to casual attendance. To optimise learning within the syllabus structure, entry to Yoga Mandir courses is via the beginner level program, irrespective of Yoga experience.

Level 1

At this level students deepen their engagement with asana. Techniques are refined and the length of time a student can stay in asana is developed. Students often remain working at this level for a number of years. In these courses students develop reflective and perceptual skills in their practice of asana. Minimum experience required for entry to this level is one term in the Yoga Mandir Beginner 2 program. Courses are booked and attended in 10-week terms

Level 2

Students must have attended a minimum of two years of Yoga Mandir courses, progressing through the Beginner and Level 1 programs, before enrolling at this level. In these courses the subject of yoga is examined more intimately through Sequence and Repetition. Practice methods require competency in the foundational study skills of Technique and use of Timings in asana. Students enrolled in these courses must have a commitment to developing a home practice.

Level 3

Recommendation by Alan Goode for enrolment. These courses are for practitioners (those with an established home practice) of Iyengar Yoga. Courses include two classes per week and are booked and attended in two 4-week blocks per term (weeks 1-4 & weeks 7-10).

Led Practice

To enrol in the Led Practice students must also be enrolled in Level 1, 2 or 3 in the same term. Led Practice is for students who wish to move from a focus on instruction to an environment where they can integrate their observation and concentration in asana. Asana names are called with the Practice leader presenting the posture, but there is no instruction. Attendance at Led Practice supports the development of a home practice

Beginner 1

A wonderful introduction to the principles and practice of Iyengar Yoga. Suitable for people with no previous experience of Yoga and for those new to Iyengar Yoga. Learning emphasis is on the standing postures, relaxation and recognising the relationship between mind, body and breath. Courses are booked and attended in 10-week terms.

Beginner 2

Those with experience of Iyengar Yoga enter the school at this level. Syllabus at this level runs across two terms and includes sitting postures, forward bends and twists and develops increased stability in the standing poses. Students learn how to mentally and emotionally approach the practice of asana (postures). Courses are booked and attended in 10-week terms.

Remedial

A private assessment with Alan Goode is a prerequisite for enrolment in a remedial course. Prior to this private assessment you will need to complete a form providing details of your injury or medical condition. During the private assessment, information about your condition will be discussed in relation to how the practice of asana can be modified and used to the greatest effect. After the private assessment, you may be recommended to the remedial course program or to the other course levels.

In the remedial courses regular attendance is essential to ensure steady progress and safeguard against strain or injury.  Through course attendance your confidence and experience of working with yogasana (postures undertaken within the yoga philosophical framework) will develop and you will be able to commence a home practice.

Remedial courses are booked and attended in 5-week terms.
