Kofi Busia is a long standing teacher in the Iyengar tradition. He has taught for over 40 years, holding his Advanced Certificate for more than 35 years.
His early formation included study of Sanskrit and Indian philosophy at Oxford University in England. It was while in Oxford that he also began teaching yoga.
During the 1970s through the mid 1980s he studied regularly with B.K.S. Iyengar, often at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI) in Pune, India. It was under Iyengar’s mentorship that he earned his Advanced Certificate.
Though originally based in Oxford for much of his teaching career, more recently he has been based in Santa Cruz, California. From there he offers classes, workshops, and retreats.
He is also an author and translator. One of his major current projects is an original translation with commentary of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras. He has published Iyengar: The Yoga Master, a book of essays on B.K.S. Iyengar, and has done much work weaving yoga philosophy with his teaching of asana.
Kofi also leads teacher training programmes. For instance a 110 hour modular teacher training course is listed among his offerings. His training emphasizes fidelity to the Iyengar method—asana, pranayama, and yoga therapeutics—in the way passed down by B.K.S. Iyengar.
