Yoga … a still point in a turning world

Yoga is for everybody, regardless of age and level of fitness. The yoga practiced at Yoga Mandir focuses on precision, alignment, sequencing, timing and the use of props, and as a regular practitioner, you can expect to improve your overall strength, posture, mobility and wellbeing.

While the practice of yoga is physical, the benefits are not just physical. When life’s pressures build, practicing yoga brings release from tension, steadiness of mind and clarity of heart. Yoga is a place of stillness and refuge. It takes us inwards beyond our thoughts. Ask any sportsperson about the link between the body and mind. The beauty of yoga is that it uses the body, coordinates the breath and frees the mind from its own restlessness.

As BKS Iyengar says: ‘Yoga is like music: the rhythm of the body, the melody of the mind, and the harmony of the soul create the symphony of life’.

Why Yoga MANDIR?

Located in Canberra, Yoga Mandir is one of Australia’s premier yoga studios. Director Alan Goode is passionately involved with the practice of yoga and its application to daily life for over 40 years. Alan conducts workshops and runs professional support and development programs including training teachers. Through his writing he unravels the themes of the yoga sutras and demonstrates their link to our daily practice. Alan has also developed an extensive resource library and engages in ongoing research work to support teacher development.

"Your body lives in the past your mind in the future. They come together in the present when you practice yoga"

BKS Iyengar

The work of Yoga Mandir is represented by the icon of the Ashok chakra, a symbol dating back to Buddhism and used by Gandhi in his quest for freedom for India. It represents the wheel of life: the hub at the centre stands for practice and the 24 spokes depict time. From practice, we learn to understand ourselves ‘at a point in time’ and to let go of definitions based on past memories or thoughts of the future.
